Cambridge Consultants Designs Emergency Ventilator in Six Weeks with MHRA Approval

“Simulink and a wider set of MathWorks tools were effectively employed […]. They did allow us to draw powerfully on the expertise of many experts on the team and guide it together into a single tapestry of design.”

Key Outcomes

  • Parallel electronics, pneumatics, and software design through use of physical models
  • Rapid prototyping and HIL for quick design iterations, verification, and testing
  • Design and ISO 13485 certification in six weeks instead of years

Cambridge Consultants is one of the world’s leading product development and technology consultancy firms.

In the fight against COVID-19, the UK Government called for the design of a production-ready, safe patient ventilator system complying with regulatory provisions like Class III software in only six weeks’ time. A project that usually takes several years had to be compressed into this short period.

Cambridge Consultants used simulation, physical modeling, rapid prototyping, and HIL testing for algorithm and hardware design and verification. This approach enabled a worldwide team of more than 200 people to collaborate and design an MHRA approved ventilator, the Veloci-Vent™, within the deadline.

Assembled from readily available parts and relying on only two sensors, the Veloci-Vent features a robust design with minimal moving parts without compromising patient safety.
