Nokia Develops 5G Communication Analysis App

App Helps Identify Issues at the Hardware-Software Interface Level

“MATLAB’s strong algorithm development capabilities [were used] to design the core algorithm program for the 5G downstream receiver…. Colleagues around the world can access SMS anytime, anywhere...[which] saves communication costs.”

Key Outcomes

  • Using MATLAB App Designer enabled rapid development of an intuitive user interface, saving time
  • MATLAB Web App Server provided easy access to the app, increasing collaboration across global teams and reducing communication costs
  • MATLAB scripts enabled use of the app without prior knowledge of 5G technology

Nokia Bell Shanghai, a Chinese technology company under the Nokia Technology Group, focuses on developing circuits and algorithms for communications technology. A significant part of its work involves designing applications to analyze baseband data for 5G communication systems, enabling the identification of issues at the hardware-software interface level. However, these applications are often time-consuming to develop and inaccessible to many engineers because they require in-depth knowledge of 5G technology and related software.

To create a more intuitive app, Nokia Bell used a wide variety of MATLAB® tools, including MATLAB App Designer, MATLAB Web App Server™, MATLAB Compiler™, and 5G Toolbox™. Using MATLAB App Designer, the team’s engineers rapidly developed a 5G downlink receiver as well as an intuitive user interface. The team also deployed the final app on MATLAB Web App Server, making it easily accessible to Nokia’s entire global team.

Using MATLAB tools, the team was able to increase collaboration and efficiency between global employees as well as save costs when developing the app. Deploying the app through MATLAB Web App Server also made it possible for employees across the globe to access and use the app anytime without additional software.
