Connecting Hardware to Simulink for Real-time Simulation and Testing

Ethan Woodruff, MathWorks

Learn how to easily connect Simulink models to your hardware to continue designing, evaluating and proving your algorithms in real-time. You will also learn how to acquire data, and use that data to create and characterize models to run together with hardware for immediate, closed-loop testing on Speedgoat real-time target machines and I/O modules.

Our presentation will center around testing a control strategy for an electronically controlled valve.  Valves have been used to control the flow all types of fluids for ages.  Like many other simple mechanisms, they have become increasingly complex and even “smart” over the last several decades. The need to provide very precise flow of fluids continues to increase today.  You can imagine the precision needed when mixing ingredients for processes like those used in creating pharmaceuticals, or how critical the control of air, fuel, and coolant flow for a power generation plant can be.  This type of precision and response is accomplished through the use of sensor feedback and motor control.   So while our case study in this presentation revolves around positioning a valve, it ultimately is showing the use of desired commands with sensor feedback to drive a motor to a specific position which is the goal for many types of mechanisms.

Highlights include:

  • Choosing the right hardware
  • Logging data, online analysis and interactive parameter tuning while executing models in real-time
  • Automated report generation and test execution
  • Hardware-in-the-loop and rapid iteration testing

About the Presenter:

Ethan Woodruff has been an Application Engineer at MathWorks for over 10 years.  He spends the majority of his time out in the field helping customers take advantage of using the MathWorks tools for various types of testing, verification, and validation activities with a specialized expertise in real-time simulation testing. Previously, he worked for BAE SYSTEMS doing real-time HIL simulation testing at the US Air Force's Guided Weapons Evaluation Facility. He holds B.A. in Physics and a B.A. in Mathematics with an emphasis in Applied Mathematics from the University of Montana.
