Leveraging SerDes Design Flows for IBIS-AMI Model Development

Corey Mathis, MathWorks
Todd Westerhoff, SiSoft

With high speed serial links rising in both data rate as well as complexity, SerDes designers are tasked with creating new transmit and receive architectures in their ASICs that employ advanced equalization and clock data recovery algorithms which yield low system BER.  The need to share these algorithms with potential customers has become equally important. The primary way in which SerDes IP is shared is through distribution of IBIS-AMI models - a black-box modeling standard that allows a semiconductor company to distribute a simulation model of their chip to a perspective customer. A primary challenge in creating and sharing these models is that the workflow for creating a SerDes design and the process for creating an IBIS-AMI model are inherently disjoint, resulting in a potential discrepancy between the models that are used for design and the models that are evaluated by customers.

In this webinar we will showcase a new workflow that has been developed jointly between MathWorks and SiSoft, which enables semiconductor companies to reuse their SerDes designs directly for IBIS-AMI model creation, simulation, and validation.

Highlights include:

  • Using Simulink for the design and simulation of SerDes architectures
  • Creating AMI models directly from SerDes designs using C Code Generation and compilation to DLLs
  • Simulation and validation of IBIS-AMI models in SiSoft Quantum Channel Designer (QCD)

About the Presenters

Corey Mathis is the Industry Marketing Manager at the MathWorks responsible for the communications, electronics, and semiconductor market segments. Prior to joining MathWorks, Corey managed a global automotive sensors business at Sensata Technologies, and spent nine years at Agilent Technologies in a variety of roles including applications engineering and business development. Corey has a MBA from Boston University and a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Union College in Schenectady, NY.

Todd Westerhoff is the VP Semiconductor Relations at SiSoft, and has over 36 years of experience in modeling and simulation, including 19 years of signal integrity experience. Todd is responsible for SiSoft's activities working with semiconductor vendors to test and develop high quality simulation AMI models. Todd has been heavily involved with the IBIS-AMI modeling specification since its inception. He has held senior technical and management positions for Cisco and Cadence and worked as an independent signal integrity consultant. Todd holds a B.E.E.E. degree from the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey.
