Why does the MATLAB installer crash near the end of the installation when installing on Windows?

This error can occur if the MATLAB installer is attempting to overwrite an existing MATLAB installation. Since the Program Files directory requires administrative access to modify, the installer is attempting to remove files and failing because it lacks the necessary permissions.
To resolve this error, navigate to your Program Files directory and delete the existing MATLAB installation folder. It is not necessary to delete the entire MATLAB folder, just the subfolder for the relevant release. (e.g. "R2014a")
