@Sarah, what's the purpose of these two comments? Are they intended to illustrate the types of "simple stats calculation functions" you're interested in? Are they intended to illustrate some code you're having difficulties with? [In this case, you should probably post them as a separate question where you ask a specific question about the difficulties you're having.] Are they intended for use as a reference card about the functions that I assume you're learning about in class or learned about doing research for your application?
