How to interpret complex values from nlmefit?

I'm using NLMEFIT to estimate 3 parameter values for a nonlinear model. The Beta and CovB that is returned contains complex values throughout. When I reduce the parameters to be estimated to 2 parameters, the estimated values are only real. In both cases, the abs values of the answers make sense and are in line with what is expected. The challenge is understanding where the imaginary part is coming from and how to interpret it.
