Color volumes as a matrix

I need to generate volumes with color voxels.
Normally color images are 3-D matrices with the 3rd dimension as the RGB codes. Now, how could we add the spatial 3rd dimention to such a matrix?

Just have a 4-D matrix where the 4th dimension is the slice number.
