Hello Peter,
This should help:
syms x y f(x,y)
f(x,y) = 4*x + 2*y -x*y +3*x^2 -5*y^2 +5;
a = f(2.4, -2.7927);
a = vpa(a,4); % Just to make it look better
b = f(2.4, 2.7127) ;
b = vpa(b,4);
