Why do I receive "Products Already Installed" when installing MATLAB or additional toolboxes?

Why do I receive the following warning when re-installing MATLAB or additional toolboxes?

Products Already installed:

All selected products are already installed.

As of R2021b, the MathWorks Installer will provide a warning message if you attempt to reinstall products that are already installed.  The MathWorks Installer will not automatically uninstall and reinstall software. Please see below for instructions on:

Uninstalling MATLAB

To reinstall MATLAB, you must first uninstall MATLAB, then you will be able to proceed in the installation.  For instructions on how to uninstall MATLAB on each supported Operating System, please refer to the following links:

Once uninstalled, you may proceed with the installation.

This is really a bad answer from Matlab/Mathworks. The installer tool should determine if what needs to be installed/uninstalled to move forward. The user shouldn't have to be bogged down with this minutia.

How is it a bad answer? The tool does figure out what needs to be installed or uninstalled to move forward.

The scenario it is designed for is that some toolboxes are already installed, and the user goes back into the installer and asks to install several toolboxes including some toolboxes already installed. For example the user might have added toolboxes to the license and goes into the installer and asks to install everything, using the tick box that selects everything. The installer then warns "You already have some of those installed, I will skip installing those." How is that a bad design?

The responses that I am seeing here appear to be mostly from people for who installation failed part way for some reason, and are looking for a way to reinstall.

It might possibly be a good idea to have a "force reinstall" option in the installer. However... if you have an installation that is corrupted enough that you cannot run matlab (as people seem to be experiencing) then is rewriting the files going to be sufficient, or is it going to leave the garbage around that might interfere with the reinstalled version? If you have those kinds of problems, then is it perhaps better to uninstall everything and install again?

Walter - clearly, there are many people having this problem. The main issue is you get to a point in the installer and it just gets stuck. I'm glad you aren't having any problems, but for those of us that do, Matlab needs to know this and address it.

Wanting MATLAB to do something different than it currently does, does not mean that an accurate description of what it does is a "bad answer" .

Are you saying that the installer tool should be able to analyze the currently installed files and the complete system configuration, and fix the software and system configuration so as to be able to install? That would be... a challenge.

For example, on the Intel Macs with Trusted Platform Module, if there is corruption of an HFS+ transaction log on the boot partition, then the only way to fix it is to boot into an in-memory-only operating system and enter the EEPROM password to unlock the encrypted parts of the partition, and hope the recovery works; if it does not work then the only sanctioned way to proceed is to erase the entire hard drive ( all partitions) and reinstall. It is common that your first notice that you have this problem is a notice from Time Machine that it had problems backing up, so your backups might or might not be corrupted... and might be stored on the same drive, of course... A bit much to expect a program such as MATLAB to be able to detect and fix, in my opinion.

Are you looking for the name of the person outside Mathworks who suggested the change? Are you looking for the name of the first Mathworks employee to have encountered the suggestion and thought that it had merit and passed it on to a manager for consideration? Are you looking for the name of the product manager that gave ultimate approval for the change to go into MATLAB ?

What would you do with the name if you were given it?

No respectable company would hand out the names of employees responsible for unpopular decisions: too much chance of the employee being harassed or doxxed or SWAT'd.

If you have a problem with the decision, then create a technical support case asking for a change to be made, and indicate clearly what change you are requesting.

No, that is not correct, you can have multiple versions installed (and activated)

The previous situation was that if you went into the installer and asked to something that was already installed (same version exactly), the installer would re-install on top of the existing installation.

The current situation is that when you ask to install something that is already installed (some version exactly) then the installer tells you Sorry, that is already installed and does not overwrite the existing installation.

@Jimmy Willie Woulo, if your downloaded MATLAB installer is a .ZIP file, and it opens it in File Explorer or a program like WinZip or 7-Zip, I would extract the files from the zip archive into a regular, normal folder. Do not attempt to run the setup.exe program from within the zip archive! Run the setup.exe program only after it has been extracted to a normal folder.

I had the same problem, in my case Matlab first installation was incomplete.

The Matlab uninstall.exe wasn't been downloaded so i had to cancel all the file from the folder in C://Program..., then i reinstalled Matlab. In my case it has worked.

You did not uninstall r2021a and you still have the old icon on your desktop or Taskbar. Make sure you're clicking on the correct icon. Installing a new version will not redirect desktop and taskbar icons automatically to the new version so they will still point to the old version. This is because sometimes people want both versions on their system and need to decide which one to launch.

If you don't have an icon for the new version anywhere, then make one on your desktop or taskbar by going to Start (Windows) and finding the new version and right click on it to tell it to make a new shortcut somewhere.

Or find "C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2022b\bin\matlab.exe" in File Explorer and right click on it and tell it to "Send to -> Desktop (Create shortcut)"

That was not a good idea.

1. If you have an email account at MATHWORKS.COM, you should just be able to deactivate your installation (on the web site or from the MATLAB group in your start menu) then uninstall. Then delete the MATLAB folder under C:\Program Files\MATLAB. Then reinstall.
2. If you have an activation key, you'll have to ask for a new one.

My employer has purchased the Deep Learning Toolbox for me and added it to my license. I have R2021b. I went through the installation process but when I try and access deep learning apps they are not there, and running nnstart informs me that I need the Deep Learning Toolbox.

I redownload the installer and run it and receive the message that products are already installed!

Fixed. I downloaded the wrong version installer. However, it correctly identified all the products I have licenses for and happily redownloaded and installed the incorrect versions for them.

When I ran the correct version, the toolbox was obviously not downloaded or installed for it.

It is strange that this is allowed to happen.

If you look in your MATLAB installation directory, you will find a deactivation executable. Run that, and then run the activation executable you find in the same directory. If it asks for your username be sure to give your computer username, not any email address.
