Performance tests show about 2x performance on Win 11 / Ryzen9 7950X3D, same performance on MacBook Pro (M1), compared to C++ implementation.
The MATLAB version has the advantage of not needing a machine specific compiled version.
To achieve the speedup, this function uses approximate Laplacian computation by convoluting the image with a 3x3 kernel in addition to using single precision instead of double. Moreover, the function tries to be conservative on memory usage by reducing the number of copies of the used images.
