Installing MATLAB 5.x under Safe Mode

In safe mode, Windows uses default settings (VGA monitor, no network, Microsoft mouse driver, and the minimum device drivers required to start Windows). You will not have access to CD-Rom drives, printers, or other devices. You can change settings as needed by clicking "Start", pointing to Settings, clicking "Control Panel", and double-clicking" Network" or "System."
If your system crashed during the installation of MATLAB 5.x please reinstall with these guidelines. Since booting clean ignores your drivers, you will not be able to access your CD-Rom drive. Please follow the instructions below to copy the CD-Rom to your hard drive before you reboot your computer into safe mode.
1. Create a temporary directory on your hard drive: (i.e. c:\mattemp) This directory will need to be ~80MB if you are not installing the help files, ~215MB if the help files are being installed.
2. Copy the contents of the CD-ROM into the temporary directory.
a. Please ensure that all files are copied by selecting "VIEW-->Options...-->View" and clicking on the "Show all files" radio button before copying the files.
b. If the help files are not being installed, the "Help" folder does not need to be copied.
c. If MATLAB 4.2c is not being installed, the "Matlab4" folder does not need to be copied.
3. Boot your computer into Safe mode. To restart Windows 95 or 98 in safe mode, click "Start", and then click "Shut down" while Windows is running. In the next windows click "Restart", click "OK". As the system reboots, press and hold the F8 key if you are running Windows 95. If you are using Windows 98 press and hold the CTRL key until the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu appears.
Enter the number for Safe mode, or highlight Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
4. Now it should be possible to run the "Setup.exe" program from the temporary directory to install MATLAB.
