This error typically occurs when installing MATLAB Student R2013a using the DVD. If you have purchased your copy of R2013a from your bookstore or from Amazon.com and have waited until after 3/6/2014 to activate or associate the activation key to your MathWorks Account, then your activation key will no longer be valid for R2013a.
To resolve the issue, you need to download the MATLAB R2014a installer from your MathWorks Account online and run that installer instead. This will entitle you to the same products you purchased, but for a newer release.
