Can I draw outside of a figure/axes?

Is there a way to draw outside of a figure window? For example, I would like to draw a line on my screen without having to open a MATLAB figure window.

I would like to overlay plots and images on top of other programs outside of MATLAB. For example, if I have a powerpoint open I can draw on top of it from MATLAB.

Have you tried these? They should work on desktop monitors, laptops, or tablets.

Thanks, that seems to work. But, 'close all' doesn't erase the line...
