BUILIDING A BASIC GAUGE TO MEASURE/MONITOR MY HOUSEHOLD POWER CONSUMPTION

Hi could any one assist with ideas or suggestions on how to tackle this task.i would like to build a gauge which could possibly be displayed on GUI to monitor my household power consumption. i would like to possibly show a circular dial gauge or even a bar or open to any suggestions.
The idea behind this design is to reduce energy consuption in my household and save energy where possible.
i would really appreciate any assistance.
thank you

I'm trying to use the idea of P= V.I. By my home 220 V AC is the basic supply. The design should monitor or take note of the current being drawn from the supply and muliply it by 220 V AC to give us the power and if the current is high the gauge should also do so. We looking at AC current.

Not sure if you are open to this. http://www.mathworks.com/products/gauges/?s_cid=global_nav. It requires Simulink and Gauges Blockset Toolbox. What type of measurement do you have? You need to measure the current, or a direct measure of the power consumption, right?
