Is is used to scale the data so that it has a maximum value of 1, so the parts of the image are considered in relative proportions rather than by absolute value. This would be common when the key information is the relationship between parts rather than how bright the example happened to be.

And im is already double so there's no need to cast it to double again. I'd also recommend using descriptive variable names instead of one letter names. Once you have dozens of variables, your code could look like an indecipherable alphabet soup that no one can follow
