How to Attach a Rotary Potentiometer on a pendulum?

I have across a very useful description of pendulum model in the webpage, http://ctms.engin.umich.edu/CTMS/index.php?aux=Activities_Pendulum
However,
I could not make out how they have actually attached or mounted the rotary potentiometer shaft on the pendulum rod.

How can we ensure just the shaft to rotate and not the cap? Any thoughts?
