I saved an m file in matlab and it was overwritten. I can't find a way to recover my file because the "File Versions" tab does not appear in my toolstrip. How can I get a file back that matlab "Generated" over my previous file?

You can look in the directory for a file with the same name and extension .asv : if it exists then it will be an autosaved version.
If there is no .asv then there is no way to recover from inside MATLAB and you would have to hope that you have a backup copy in some form.
