How to link between Mathemetica and Matlab

I am working in matlab with the image processing toolbox. I need to fit a data, and since I do not have the curve fitting toolbox, I will use Mathematica for this task. However I do not know how the two softwares communicate. In other words how Mathematica receives the raw data from MATLAB and how does it send the fitted curve to MATLAB
Assistance will be appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks Walter, I am really comfortable with MATLAB and I will try to compute the derivative of a curve based on discrete points before going to mathematica.
