Just wondering if there is a way to automate the number of data cursors available. I want specifically 8 data cursors to be placed on the figure. I would like to avoid the need to right click and press 'Create New Data Tip' for every point.

If you hold down the ALT key and click elsewhere on your figure, you will be able to add another datatip without selecting 'Create New Data Tip' from the context menu. Hope this helps!

alt-click is equivalent to right click. Mel wanted to place the data cursors programmatically rather than having to click for their positions.

Press "Shift", then "Left-click" the sets of data you wanna display on the figure. You are done!!!... Let me know if this answers you question.
