The colormaps vary two of the channels about a third, using a sinusoidal function to create a naturalistic character. The sum of the channels is directly related to the image value. In the default behavior, this means that the channel sum rises linearly with the value being displayed. However, the user may change this relationship by a polynomial coefficient (for example, using the coefficient two causes the color to change with the square of the value).
