How to open variables in command line?

Is there a function that can be typed into the command window to open a variable listed in the workspace? I have many hundreds of variables generated in one of my codes and finding individual variables is a huge time waster.

use the command
openvar(variablename)
eg: if variable name is var then enter the command
openvar('var')

I still don't see how to open a variable. I don't want to list it in the command window, I want to open the variable and view its contents as a matrix (if it is a scalar/vector/matrix).
i.e. open the variable in a new window with the spreadsheet style viewer.
