Is FEX: Matlab schemer simple enough? I use it together with defining some dark default colors for figures and axes. See e.g. https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/86533-dark-mode-plot .

See this as well:
particularly Walter's comments.
TL;DR
Will TMW ever make a simple dark mode?
For the Java interface, no. Not ever.
For the new replacements that have been being added in recent versions? Maybe, but considering how they tend to break in certain environments, I don't hold any hope that the usability of the end result won't be spoiled for some other reason. That's just my opinated prediction.
FWIW, the workarounds that I and some others gave using display/window inversion should still work regardless of the UI changes -- but I don't really think that fits the requirements of the question as it was worded (i.e. simple)
