Launching Simulink crashes MATLAB R2012a. Advice on how to fix?

In the process of trying to familiarize myself with MATLAB's advanced functionality (Simulink is a particular point of interest), I found that attempting to open Simulink crashes the entire MATLAB program (including Simulink)

.
An image is attached showing the exact error.
I'm running R2012a on a Macbook Pro with OS X 10.10 Yosemite. It's worth noting that when I first upgraded to OS X 10.10 Yosemite, MATLAB could not launch at all. I fixed this by (1) patching MATLAB with the files from The MathWorks released in response to this issue and (2) linking an old X11 directory (that MATLAB tries to reference) to the directory that contains X11 in OS X 10.10.
Anyone have thoughts?
