I have MATLAB on a virtual machine, how can I control a device connected to another computer via serial port?

As the title indicates, the MATLAB is installed on a virtual machine, we have a physical device connected to a different computer via serial port connection. How would I be able to control this device using the MATLAB on the virtual machine?
Thank you, please le tme know if I can further clarify the question.

You would need the cooperation of the machine that the physical device is connected to (unless you are willing to unplug it from that machine and plug it into a Terminal Server or equivalent.)
The ease of doing this depend upon the operating systems involved. Probably the easiest would be if the virtual machine and the host that the device is plugged in to, are both Linux and/or MacOS. I am not sure what the options are if Windows machines are involved.

Thank you, so my take is that there is no other way unless connected the physical device directly to the host comptuer.
