Matlab r2017b wont run on Sonoma

I need to use R2017b because of compatibility issues with newer versions. It ran perfectly well on Ventura is there a fix for this?

Generally, no. Older releases often reach a point in time where they simply won't run on newer operating systems. If it won't run, then you have your answer. You were actually lucky it ran on Ventura, since the system requirements doc does not say it will run there. Ventura is not listed there, so there may well be problems with some toolboxes, or some known issues.

John's answer is spot-on, but yours might not be an all-or-nothing situation.

Do you know specifically why a newer MATLAB version is not usable? If, for example, it is one or two specific functions that changed, it may be possible to use the newer MATLAB version, but maintain separate user-defined functions to replicate the older behavior. Also, MATLAB functions also often have input parameters that will use older behavior, even it is not the default behavior in the newer version.

Yes, I was going to add that idea, that possibly there might be something simple in the code that prevents use of a later release, something that could be fixed. But this would force them to delve into their code. That might be a good idea anyway, since future OS releases would be even more problematic.

Thanks for all the comments I guess I have to bite (byte!) the bullet and try and make some of my ancient C code work with the newer verions.

I have now tried two other versions of Matlab on Mac Sonoma 14.2.1. R2022A does work but it is extremely slow. The GUI takes 10s or longer to respond - so basically it is unusable. It would be very useful to know why that happens as R2017a worked perfectly on Ventura on exactly the same computer a MacBook Air M2 2022 with 16Gb memory. I have also tried R2023b. I had to use the converter to change the FIG file to the new format. Although this works- OK- some of my custom GUI elements don’t work properly. I have a custom progress bar that doesn't work. Ideally I would like to work with the R2022A version using the original FIG file but only if I can get it to work properly. Any help on this I would really appreciate.

Sorry, no it is not compatible. Even the command line version will not work.
