Hi..I am doing my project on fault classication of transmission lines using a AI technique. In my base paper, three phase voltages and six current input signals were sampled at a sampling frequency of 1 kHz and further processed by simple 2nd-order low-pass Butterworth filter with cut-off frequency of 400 Hz. Subsequently, one full cycle Discrete Fourier transform is used to calculate the fundamental components of voltage and current. The inputsignals were normalized in order to reach the ANN input level...
now my doubt is..what is the requirement or necessity fundamental components of voltage and current which were never used anywhere ..are those values some how related to the normalization..please help

Hi Aditya,
In the context of fault classification for transmission lines using AI techniques, understanding the role of fundamental components and normalization is crucial.
Normalization
1. Purpose: Normalization is used to scale the input data to a range suitable for the neural network, typically between 0 and 1 or -1 and 1. This helps in speeding up the training process and improving the convergence of the model.
2. Consistency: By normalizing the input signals, you ensure that the model treats all features equally, without any bias towards signals with larger magnitudes.
3. Compatibility: Neural networks are sensitive to the scale of input data. Normalization ensures that the input data is compatible with the activation functions used in the network, such as sigmoid or tanh, which operate optimally within a specific range.
Relationship Between Fundamental Components and Normalization
- Sequential Processing: The extraction of fundamental components and normalization are sequential steps in preprocessing. First, you extract the fundamental components to focus on the most relevant part of the signal, then normalize these components to prepare them for the neural network.
- Data Quality: By using fundamental components, you ensure that the data fed into the AI model is of high quality and relevance, while normalization ensures that this data is in a form that the model can effectively process.
In summary, while the fundamental components themselves may not be directly used in the normalization process, they play a critical role in ensuring that the data fed into the ANN is both relevant and appropriately scaled. This combination enhances the model's ability to learn and classify faults effectively.
Hope this helps.
