Refreshing/updating a file used for data

Hi, I have searched for the past day what function to use and can't seem what I am looking for. I am plotting data over time as it is being recorded. I am using 6 separate files, which will be plotted on 6 subplots. Every 5 seconds I want this graph updated. What is the best way to update the files I am using? Do they update automatically? Should I just open and then close them and then open and close them again and again everytime?

Try using either drawnow or refreshdata.
