GUI function error: SizeChangedFcn, but resiziing is set to 'off'

My GUI is giving me a strange error: when I open it for the first time, the GUI doesnt become visible until I call one of the axes - eg.

endaxes(handles.axes2);

However when the GUI does open I am now getting this error:

Note this GUI used to work well. However since then the GUI figure has been opened on more than one machine / display / matlab install (and was saved) which could be contributing. I have set the GUI resize option to 'off', or unresizable. Environment is 2015b.

One other point: I am unable to manually resize the GUI figure in GUIDE.
