There is a group of about a dozen matlab_crash_dump.xxxx files in my home directory. Is there any point in keeping these? What would I need them for?

Crash dumps can be used to determine the cause of crash.

There is value in keeping them in case you want to work with Technical Support to understand and address the root cause.
Firstly though, it would be great if you send them to MathWorks once you are promoted to do so. With current releases, you would get an email within 5 minutes or so, if the dump matches to a known issue and you are provide with a link where to find information to address the issue.
