MCR quite large, remove unncessary parts of the program (allowed by license?)

as the "Matlab Compiler Runtime" ist quite large (about 2GB unzipped for Matlab 2016a and even 3.60 GB for Matlab 2018b).

Is it possible and allowed by the license to ship the content of

C:\Program Files\MATLAB\MATLAB Runtime\v901

after removing unnecessary files in our commercial product. I would assume that for example the header files *.h, *.png, *html

are not needed for our compiled "jar".

Are there any plan to make the MCR modular, as it is a quite large package, if you only use some functions without GUI and so on.

How do you plan on extracting only the functions you need, and removing unnecessary ones, from the MCR?

Of course that a legimate question. I think for *.h, *.png, *html its clear and I probably could also include toolboxes which I don't need (but of course the amount of MB is not so large for theses files in total)

That is actually quite a valid question.

The two other runtimes that come to mind, are the Java Runtime Environment (72 Mb installed, according to https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/windows-diskspace-140460.html) and .NET Framework, which tend to be large in earlier versions (maxing up to 250 Mb in version 3.5) but down to 54 Mb in version 4.0, according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework_version_history.

These numbers are magnitude smaller than MCR size.

I would say that the total size of R2018b vs R2016a somehow hampers the upgrade of the version in our case.

I am not a lawyer, nor a Mathworks employee.

I would expect you would be allowed to remove files from those folders, but you would not be allowed to repackage that into a new setup. You would probably be allowed to have a custom setup that installs the MCR and then removes some files.
