compare files stopped working after upgrading to Catalina

The file compare status indicates that the compare is complete but no results are shown. Then a spinning wheel appears and continues.

When I hit compare (in the pop-up), the Comparison viewer opens and a message briefly appears that the compare is complete but the page is blank. A blue spinning wheel appears. After a while, a pop-up appears with the error "java.util.concurrent.TimeoutException: Timeout waiting for task.". It appears that it can't find the java code. Is there a way to download/link the Java code without having to redownload and install Matlab?

Try increasing the Java Heap memory. The error might be occurring due to not enough memory.
To increase the Java heap memory, refer to the following documentation:

I have exactly the same problem, trying to use visdiff(first_dir, second_dir) on MATLAB R2019b with MacOS Catalina (10.15.2) gives that error and the behaviour described by Eileen. It is not fixed when increasing the Java heap memory to the maximum (4096MB).
Any other ideas?

When I search for the Java source code, I don't find it. When I type "version -java" into Matlab, I get "'Java 1.8.0_202-b08 with Oracle Corporation Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM mixed mode'. However, when I do a search on Java 1.8.0, nothing is returned. The crash log shows the following:

I downloaded and reinstalled Matlab 2019b hoping it would reinstall java. Now Matlab won't open without use of a terminal window. When I try to open it directly, it just hangs. The worst part is that it didn't fix the compare function!
