How do I manage and pass information between my main app and all of its children?

I made an app in app designer to plot selected data files. I also created a child app which allows the user to update axis limits on the parent app's graph, following Mathworks' documentation to get them to communicate with one another.
Along those same lines, how can I expand this notion (sharing information between two apps) to work with any number of instances of a single child app? For example, I'd like to be able to call (for example) 10 instances of the same child app from my parent app, and be able to communicate with them separately. As I do not know how many child apps a user will call at one time, it does not seem feasible to add a property to store each open instance (as indicated in the documentation referenced above).
