Issues setting the MATLAB_JAVA environment variable to use custom JVM in artixlinux

Hi,

I am trying to set my own JVM set in artixlinux. I set java-8-openjdk/jre.

Following archlinux forums in order to set custom JVM for matlab i did the following:

env MATLAB_JAVA=/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk/jre

and

export MATLAB_JAVA=/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk/jre

after that if i check in matlab with

>> java -version

i get the error

"undefined function or variable" 

Can anybody help me with this issue? Is it relevant? I mean, is my custom JVM working in Matlab already? How do i check? Thanks in advance.
