I'm pretty sure that for the second section of code, that the person who wrote the code was making a joke to see if you would notice. The actual code is:

node = 3;
lamda = 0.7;
P1 = lamda.^node; P2 = (1-lamda).^node;
if lamda <= 0.5
minP = P1; maxP = P2;
else
minP = P2; maxP = P1;
end
[minP, maxP]
