The way I understood it, I cannot connect blue and black components in Simulink. I am trying to create a simple circuit that looks like this (any of the two) but there is always one component that is of another color, which is why I cannot connect them. Please help. Thanks in advance.

Hi LightFury,
They are the blocks for electrical modeling but different domain blocks, that why you can't connent them directry. To make some electrical model with Simscape, we use Electrical library blocks(Blue color), but only "Specialized Power Systems" library(Black color) is a component of another domain.
So please make the model by using blocks other than "Specialized Power Systems" library in Electrical library or using blocks only in "Specialized Power Systems" library.(you can connect these different blocks using blocks in"Specialized Power Systems">Utilities, but it can be confusing, so I think it's a good to start with just one domain blocks.)
By the way, "Specialized Power Systems" library is mainly used for modeling high power areas (eg town power grids). If you want to model a typical power electronics system (inverter, DCDC, etc.), it might be good to use a Simscape electrical block, not"Specialized Power Systems" library blocks.
I hope this will help.
