MATLAB 6.5 (R13) has not been qualified on RedHat 9. There has been several customer-reported issues regarding this version of RedHat and MATLAB, though RedHat 9 uses a 2.4.x kernel, which is supported with MATLAB. (The majority of the reported behaviors are not consistently reproducible.)
Our development team has been notified of the issues relating to RedHat 9 and is currently investigating them, but at this time there are no known workarounds.
Please note that if you are experiencing small MATLAB Java dialog windows on Linux, see the related solutions section at the bottom of this page.

There is absolutely no chance that RHEL 9 would natively run R13 without breaking part of the operating system.
