Impulse function characteristics settling time

When impulse function is used why i can only see transient time and no settling time?

When you observe only the transient response and not the settling time in a system's response to an impulse function, it typically means that the system response has not yet reached a stable state, or the settling time is beyond the duration of your observation.
  1. Transient Response: The initial behavior of a system when subjected to an impulse input. It includes behaviors such as oscillations, overshoot, and other initial responses as the system settles towards a stable state.
  2. Settling Time: The time it takes for a system's response to reach and remain within a specified range around its final, steady-state value. The settling time depends on system characteristics like damping and natural frequency.
  3. Reasons for Observing Only Transient Response:
  • Observation Window: If the duration of observation is too short, it may not capture the entire settling time.
  • System Complexity: Complex systems with multiple modes or resonances can have extended settling times.
  • Amplification: Systems with amplification or feedback loops may exhibit oscillations that dominate the transient response, but these may eventually settle.
  1. To Observe Settling Time:
  • Extend Observation: Increase the duration of observation to ensure the entire settling time is captured.
  • Reduce Oscillations: Minimize oscillations using damping or control techniques.
  • Analyze System Characteristics: Understand system characteristics to estimate expected settling time based on damping, natural frequency, and other factors.
Observing settling time is essential to understand how a system behaves as it approaches its steady-state behavior, and it requires careful consideration of system dynamics and the duration of observation.
