Biomechanical Analysis in MATLAB and Simulink

James Shippen, Coventry University, UK

In this webinar we will illustrate biomechanical analysis within the MATLAB and Simulink environment. Applications of the technique range across medical analysis, physical therapy, engineering design, and sport and exercise science. Examples from each of these fields will be demonstrated within the webinar. A biomechanical model of a human will be demonstrated in SimMechanics and the Optimization Toolbox will be used to calculate the anatomical trajectories, loads in the muscles and contact forces at the joints.  An S-function of the human model will be incorporated into Simulink and run during the webinar.

About the Presenter: James Shippen currently leads the Biomechanics research group at Coventry University, UK where he runs a motion analysis laboratory and writes biomechanical analysis software. James  was awarded a PhD in Mechanical Engineering by the University of Birmingham, UK and has subsequently worked in the defense, automotive and medical industries primarily on the fields of dynamics mathematical modeling and simulation.  He specializes in applying engineering principles within biomechanical environments and has developed analysis code, primarily MATLAB code, in collaboration with clinical laboratories across Europe and the USA.

Recorded: 27 Sep 2011
