Powertrain Design for Heavy Equipment with Simscape

Design powertrains for heavy equipment with Simscape™. Model diesel engines or electric motors powered by batteries or fuel cells. Measure efficiency of conventional and electric designs.

Simscape helps you design heavy equipment. In this video, we're going to look at modeling the power source for our wheel loader, including diesel engines and electrical systems. Diesel engines are a common power source in heavy equipment. Simscape lets you model them with a torque speed curve. Fuel consumption can be estimated.

For more detailed models, crank engine resolved engine models can be used. Electrical powertrains can also be modeled. This includes the battery, battery management system, and electric motors. Fuel cells can be included as an abstract power source or as a model that tracks gas flow through the anode and cathode.

The wheel loader model includes an electrical CVT. The power flow between a generator, battery, and motor is controlled to achieve a variable ratio between the engine and the driveline. You can download the model we have provided and test electrical powertrain concepts against your design requirements.
